Di Malaysia sekrang terdapat banyak pusat latihan perkapalan antaranya ALAM, RANACO,PELITA dan banyak lagi. ALAM atau Akademi Laut Malaysia merupakan pusat latihan perkapalan yang pertama di Malaysia. Disini pada mulanya anak-anak Malaysia memulakan kerjaya sebagai seorang penakluk samudra yang berjaya.

Local seamen not up to mark

Local seamen need to buck up if they want to see better employment prospects.

The Malaysian Maritime Academy (ALAM) who trains local seafarers claimed that local shipping companies are not so keen on hiring the locals as they find them less efficient and too demanding.

“They say our seafarers are not hardworking, not disciplined and demand a high salary compared to the foreigners,” said its chief executive officer M. Adthisaya Ganesen.

He said these companies are instead outsourcing workforce from foreign crew supply agencies.

“There are many foreign crew supply agencies around providing crew who are already trained for the job at a very low price.”

According to a survey done by the Maritime Institute of Malaysia, there are only 38% of Malaysian seafarers who are serving on Malaysian ships.

To make up the remaining manpower requirements, foreigners were employed.

The top five countries that dominated the work force on Malaysian vessels are: Philippines (2,684), Indonesia (1,653), China (1,159), India (951) and Vietnam (284).

Adthisaya Ganesen said seafarers need to change their attitude and mindset towards the job if they want to be hired by shipping companies.

“Many of them have the attitude that being a seafarer is just another job. They just do it for the money. They think they can do the bare minimum and still get paid at the end of the month. They fail to think long-term.”

“ALAM has come up with a two week course to transform the mindset of seafarers.

“We believe that the course will help them change their attitude and make them more disciplined,” he said.

“The course was jointly developed with MISC and covers amongst others motivation talks, awareness on health, safety, security and environment, corporate social responsibility and team building.”

Adthisaya Ganesen also said that the industry is suffering a shortage of seafarers.

Statistics from the Maritime Department show that we have about 30,000 seafarers but Adthisaya Ganesen said those records include non-active and retired seafarers.

“The records need to be cleaned up. The reality is that 50% of the officers working on board Malaysian vessels of 1,000 grt and above are foreigners who are mainly from Philippines, Indonesia, China and India.

“As for the domestic and home trade vessels 70% of the workforce in Malaysia are also foreigners,” he said.

He said ALAM has been trying very hard to attract school leavers to choose a career in this industry but they will need support from shipping companies to sponsor these students.

He also emphasised that ALAM not only serves MISC’s requirement but also that for the industry and nation.

“In fact, there are many students who are interested to pursue career at sea but ALAM is unable to accept above a certain number due to the lack of sponsorships and the lack of training berths onboard ships.

“Shipping companies do not want to spend money training these inexperienced people,” he said.

The number of new entrants trained by ALAM from year 1999 to 2003 showed that the applicants keep rising, while those accepted remain a straight line on the graph.

Adthisaya Ganesen said ALAM’s capacity has not been exploited at the moment.

“We have the capacity to accommodate up to 10,000 students at any one time but right now we only have 670 students. Ninety per cent of them are being sponsored by MISC,” he said.

He added that out of the 3582 vessels of 1,000 grt and above, 82 belong to MISC.

“Where is the source for the manpower for the remaining vessels of 1,000 grt and above?”

Adthisaya Ganesen said it was high time that shipping companies took a step forward by training the local seafarers.

“Instead of just complaining that our seafarers are not up to mark, they should work towards improving their quality. Of course this would involve training and re training in order to get the results,” he said.

In an immediate reaction, local shipping companies claim that they welcome local seafarers on board but there are not many seafarers to choose from.

Alam Maritim (M) Sdn Bhd managing director Azmi Ahmad said shipping companies are facing difficulty finding local crew to work on board offshore vessels. This has forced them to turn to foreign labour.

He also said local seamen preferred onshore jobs to sailing.

“Some of them demand high salaries as they know that there is a demand for local crew,” he said.

Azmi also agreed that many of the local seafarers require training and has no qualms about training them.

“Many of them are not trained to work on offshore vessels. We have to train them ourselves when we hire them.

EA Technique (M) Sdn Bhd managing director and chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Hak Md Amin said he doesn't mind paying locals higher salaries than foreigners but some of the locals fail to meet expectations.

“The common problems we have with some locals are drug addiction, they abandon ship, do not respect their superiors, get involved in brawls in pubs and they are not hardworking.

“They take their job for granted as they know that shipping companies give priority to locals,” he said.

Abdul Hak also said that he prefers taking in crew that have basic training.

“Spending money to train them can be quite risky as we don't really know their background and if they will remain loyal to us. There have been cases where we sponsor them and they abandon ship. Some get into trouble with the police and we are forced to sack them. In these cases they can't pay us back,” he said.

Abdul Hak said it costs up to RM7,000 to sponsor one crew.

“We don't mind sponsoring them after they have proved themselves. They can come in with basic training and after a year or two we would sponsor them to further enhance themselves,” he said.

Abdul Hak agrees with ALAM that the local seamen need to change their attitude and mindset.

“It would be good if ALAM can train them to have leadership qualities, be disciplined and hard working,” he said.

1. Ensure that the issuance of Certificate of Recognition is conducted in an efficient and systematic manner whilst being in compliance to The Merchant Shipping (Training and Certification)Rules 1999.

2. Verify and Process the issuance of the Malaysian Minimum Safe Manning Document.

Marine engineering bridging programme

Info regarding Marine Engineering Bridging Programme In ALAM

2008 - ALAM Commenced Marine Engineering Bridging Programme for Graduate Mechanical Engineers to become licensed Marine Engineers.

Open to all degree holder in Machanical Engineering or Mekatronik in domestic or international university.

All training/modular courses are fully sponsored by MISC Bhd

Training will be held at Akademi Laut Malaysia cawangan Batu Rakit branch. But modular course will be held at ALAM main campus Melaka.

Period of MEBP is 7 months. 1 month is Modular Course and 6 month is Marine Engineering. Remember, this is compress course and we need to absorb as much as we can.

At Alam, well known as Brigding Cadet. Elaun training is given depends on sponsor.

1st batch bridging programme consists of 27 cadets.

6 Bulan at Batu Rakit campus. Divided into 2 phases. All subject for COC WKE Class 4.

1st phase subject: Marine Engineering Knowlegde, Electrotechnology, Control And Automation, Introduction to Shipping and Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture and Marine Lab.

2nd phase subject : Marine Plant Maintenance, Engineering Knowledge Motor, General, Steam, Marine Electrical Practice, Maritime Law

After 6 months, candidates will be trained on board ship for 9 months as the MARDEP requirement.

After 9 month practical,candidates prepare for COC WKE Class 4.

At ALAM,all MEBP cadet should be complied with all ALAM rules and regulation such as smart cut hair, fall-in, row call, colours, PT(physical training), room inspection. Meal is also provided galley.

Contract with MISC will be end after 3 years holding COC Class 1. About 7 years.

2008 were pioneer batch.Intake is around May~August.


For this year 2010 latest new for candidates which apply Marine Engineering Bridging Programme, interview will be held at ALAM on 26th and 27th of May 2010.

Revealing the secrets onboard the Ship

A sophisticated equipment known as the Voyage Data Recorder (VDR) can determine the past actions or movements of the ship in the event of an accident. It serves as the ship’s “Black Box” if you would compare it to an airplane. How would a Voyage Data Recorder help us in terms of safety? Many accidents that involve two or more ships often resulted to human error. With the invention and implementation of the voyage data recorder, solving ship related accident cases will consume less time and better result.

What is a Voyage Data Recorder?

Voyage Data Recorder is a data recording system designed for all vessels required to comply with the IMO’s International Convention SOLAS Requirements (IMO Res.A.861(20)) in order to collect data from various sensors on board the vessel.

How is the VDR similar to a blackbox?

The Voyage Data Recorder records the events on board the ship such as: radar, voice, DGPS, engine orders, and weather information. In the events of an accident, all of this recording will be analyzed to have a knowledge of what really happened. I’ll provide you with the link to a more detailed information about the Voyage Data Recorder.

“JRC calls its VOYAGE DATA RECORDER the marine equivalent of an airplane’s “black box.” Composed of a protective capsule and recording control unit, the Voyage Data Recorder can record and store data regarding position, speed, heading, bridge communication, radar data, VHF communication and a wide array of boat conditions”

What does it look like?

The VDR picture on the left would most likely look the same onboard your ship. You can find it on the monkey island or the flying bridge deck. The picture on the right shows the VDR panel when opened.

How will it benefit the seafarers?

With the advancements of technology, the equipment onboard the ships are evolving into a more accurate but sometimes complex piece of equipment. Mariners who would depend on electronic navigation too much could endanger his self and would later cause the ship to an accident. A variety of critiques would comment on the result of the accident whether it’s human error or equipment malfunction, and could even take a lot of days in court. With the implementation of the voyage data recorder, ship related accidents lessens the days of waiting and improve in determining its actual cause. Learning from those accidents, additional laws can be implemented. Through circular letters, newsletters, and other media; we can create awareness and future prevention of the same accidents.

The Deadly Life of Stowaways

Stowaways are part of the normal life of seafarers. We always find ways to prevent stowaways from coming oboard our ship. A lot of reports were made wherein stowaways were thrown overboard by the crew or captain of the ship, and left to die at sea. A lot of reasons arise whenever we talk about stowaways. It usually relates to poverty and hunger that forces them to migrate illegally. Stowaways transport to different countries on different “stowaway cargo carrier”, if you’d like to call it that way. They would go onboard General Cargo Ship, Container Ship, Tanker Ship, and all other kinds of ship that you can think of. It can either result to a successful migration or they may end up being caught onboard the ship. The worst part of it is when they are thrown overboard.

How will you prevent stowaways

For years many countries and organizations, including the IMO were finding ways to prevent stowaways onboard the ship. They have call upon public authorities, port authorities, ship-owners and their representatives as well as shipmasters to cooperate in preventing stowaway incidents. They emphasize on regular patrolling within port areas and establishment. Special storage facilities for cargoes particularly susceptible to stowaway access must be continuously monitored by persons including the cargo entering these areas. You can usestowaway checklist.

What are the rights of Stowaways?

It’s like a punishment to seafarers whenever we caught a stowaway onboard. You have to give stowaway beds or room where they can sleep, you have to provide them food, etc. That is why a lot of stowaways were maltreated onboard the ship whenever they were caught. But they have rights and these rights should be respected. Let me quote an article from “The New York Times” regarding this.

“Immigration and Naturalization Service policy requires shipowners to detain, feed and house stowaways who request asylum throughout their asylum process, which can take months and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. This policy puts an unfair burden on the maritime industry to find a solution for a problem it did not create and has little ability to control. The threat of fines has prompted some ship’s crews to treat illegal immigrants harshly. But in severely under guarded ports around the world a handful of seafarers cannot possibly monitor the contents of the 2,000 to 4,000 containers carried on modern merchant ships. Seafarers are often placed at risk by the desperate acts of stowaways.”

“The asylum policy should not be able to force shipowners to become jailers, nor should it result in locking asylum seekers in prisons like common criminals. We need a process for according asylum to politically oppressed people, one that provides for screening and housing asylum applicants and does not delegate an imprisoning function to shipowners.” - The New York Times.

What to do in case you have stowaways

As mentioned above, you should treat stowaways with extra attention. The Captain or the crew will be responsible if something happen to a stowaway while onboard the ship. You must use diplomatic ways to deal with stowaways. Remember that they are onboard seeking refuge and they should not be maltreated.

You should never do the following on stowaways

You may probably hear about stowaways being thrown overboard. This kind of practice is not acceptable and it is punishable by law. If you remembered hearing a news about a “Chinese Captain” who allegedly thrown a stowaway while onboard a panamanian flag vessel. He was released after being jailed for five years at Panama.

It should never result to this kind of situation. As seafarer you must always remember “No one is left behind” and that includes stowaways.

Responsibilities as an Officer of the Watch


An Officer in charge of the Navigational Watch or Officer of the Watch (OOW) as we all know comprises the Bridge Team. On merchant vessels, the watch duty officer is always accompanied with a look-out who is also a helmsman. In case the officer of the watch is a newly promoted officer, he will be performing his duties on the bridge under the watchful eyes of the Captain.

What is the Officer of the Watch responsibilities?

  • The Officer of the Watch is the Master’s representative and responsible for complying and executing the master’s orders.
  • The OOW is responsible to the master for:
  1. Safe Navigation of the ship
  2. Safety of the personnel or crew onboard the ship
  3. Safety of the environment and pollution prevention
  4. Maintaining the required standards of good seamanship
  5. compliance of COLREGS
  6. Compliance with bridge standing orders and night orders
  7. Keeping a proper look out at all times
  • The officer of the watch must be familiar with:
  1. Government regulations
  2. International conventions
  3. Bridge Standing Orders
  4. Master’s Standing Orders
  • The Officer of the watch is responsible for the safe navigation of the vessel even with the presence of the master on the bridge, until the time the master informs him specifically and in writing that he will take the command or the watch.
  • The Officer of the watch should keep his watch on the bridge until properly relieved.
  • He shall consult or ask the Master if he is in doubt of any interpretation or regulations or instructions, or if he has any doubts regarding the manner of which he is required to carry out his duties.

These are among the duties of an Officer of the watch. I’d like to point out something more about this matter, which I mostly notice on the bridge.

The role of the Officer of the Watch when the Master takes command of the ship

Most of the time I’ve noticed that some OOW would simply stand on the radar, drink a cup of coffee, but forgot the most important part of his job. You are on the bridge to check if the captain is giving the right orders on engine speed, rudder command, following the instructions of the VTS, and applying the COLREGS.

You are there to check that everything is under control. This also applies when the ship is under pilotage. Remember that the master has a lot of things running over his head. A lot of messages and telexes to send, and to answer. And you are the person that he shall depend on the bridge to achieve the safe navigation of the ship.

The increasing load of paperwork onboard the ship

Commercial shipping gained a significant change over the years. With the increasing needs on ports and chartering, ship captains and officers faces several risk that connects to accomplishments of paperwork. Attempts to lessen paperwork by using computer format forms were adopted by other countries but not all of them.

An incident because of paperwork

A 44,788 dead weight product carrier tanker “Ficus” grounded Off the Bahamas coast. The tanker altered course to pick up a pilot off New Providence Island in Bahamas following a voyage from Curacao. The watchkeeping officer with a nine-month experience as an OOW (Officer of the Watch) was on the bridge with the OS (Ordinary Seaman). At the time of incident the OS acts as the lookout and helmsman at the same time.

The cause of accident

An inexperienced junior officer on the bridge altered course too early and lost his awareness. The master on the other hand got stuck in his cabin with the paperwork. The OOW was busy plotting the course, completing prearrival checklists, communicating with the bosun on pilot ladder preparations, and making repeated unsuccessful attempts to contact the pilot station.

The master got delayed in his cabin as he prepared a report on a commercial inspection of the vessel which shall be carried out in port. When he arrived on the bridge, the vessel was closer to land than expected, and any action to avoid it was too late.

The conclusion

The investigators concluded “Human Error” as the cause of incident, and recommend that bridge manning levels play a vital role on the passage plan.

An added bridge team member could help the OOW during arrival at the pilot station, and could have prevented grounding the vessel. The safety of the vessel is top priority. One of the big disadvantages of ISM is paperwork. In the digital era like us, paper reduction program should be an alternative. With fewer crew and more papers, it’s becoming an issue of stress and safety for ship officers.

How to prevent fatigue onboard

Fatigue has a great effect on us. Human error caused by fatigue can cause a risk to life, property, and to the environment. It affects every seafarer. Do you know what causes fatigue on board the ship?

  • Different weather of all extremes.
  • Long hours of duty.
  • Noise and Vibration.
  • Tension between crew members.
  • Lack of sleep, and poor quality of rest.
  • Different time zones that affects our biological clock.
  • Stress and excessive workload.
  • Pressure on existing regulations, paperworks, emails, and telexes.
  • Inspections, whether internal or external inspection (such as PSC, Vetting, etc.) causes stress, fear, and other worries which disrupts the seafarers physically and mentally.

These are just some of it, but there’s a lot more to add to it. What I’m trying to say is that we must learn how to manage Fatigue. You must learn to protect yourself against fatigue.

  • Have a regular exercise.
  • You must have a continuous sleep.
  • Eat light snack before bedtime, to avoid waking up early and hungry.
  • Job rotation is also good to break some monotonous kind of work.
  • A little humor to lighten up a day’s work.


We are all in the same ship. We must help and understand the needs of each individual to prevent fatigue.

10 common reasons why seafarers quit shipboard job

A cadet on a maritime school aspires to become a good seafarer someday. With his learned knowledge he strives to embark onboard a ship in a good company. Working onboard the ship for more than 6 months even up to 1 year gives him a chance to upgrade his profession and for possible promotion as an officer. After a few years of working onboard the ship he suddenly decides to stop and start to work on land. Nobody knows the reason why.

Why choose to work at sea?

Many seafarers are like the example above. A lot of reason may contribute to a person’s decision of becoming a seafarer. I can still remember the question that my Captain asks me during my cadet days. “Why you choose to become a seafarer”? I give him a quick answer, “I want to become rich”. He said to me that if every seafarer would give the same reason that I did, it would be a selfish answer.

“The reason that we choose to become a seafarer is to give our family a better life and to encourage other mariners to become good at their job as a seafarer”.

Those are the humble words of the captain that I was lucky enough to serve with. The life onboard the ship cannot be compared on the life on land. We do our job in a more difficult environment. We seldom see the land. We expose ourselves to different kinds of weather. We see the same person every day. We work with different types of people in different countries. We work under pressure. So why choose to work at sea? It’s simply because we like the challenge and the adventure behind our work.

Why quit your job at sea?

Various reasons contribute to the seafarer’s decision of leaving the ship. A lot of person consider it personal or work related reasons. Here are 10 common reasons why they decide to leave the ship.

  1. They were given a chance to work in a shipping company
  2. They had a very bad experience onboard their previous ship
  3. They had a problem with their wife that leads to divorce and could not handle the problem, which leads to the decision of stopping his profession as a seafarer
  4. They manage to find an alternative job in land with almost the same salary of his job on the ship
  5. They were given an opportunity to work on land related to shipping and maritime industry
  6. Their wife and family doesn’t want them to work onboard anymore
  7. They were homesick
  8. A member of their family died while they are still onboard the ship and this became a very bad experience that they can never erase from their minds.

S&P berpendapat hasil kumpulan sudah cecah paras dasar pada tahun kewangan 2010



STANDARD & Poor’s (S&P) mengekalkan cadangannya agar pelabur terus memegang saham MISC Bhd. Firma penyelidikan itu turut mengekalkan harga sasaran 12 bulan MISC pada RM8.88 yang dikira berdasarkan penilaian aliran tunai selepas diskaun (DCF). S&P berpendapat pendapatan kumpulan itu sudah mencecah paras dasar dalam tahun kewangan 2010.

Untung bersih MISC pada tahun kewangan berakhir 31 Mac 2010 susut ketara sebanyak 50.1 peratus kepada RM682.046 juta daripada RM1.366 bilion.

Ia diraih daripada pendapatan yang susut 9.2 peratus kepada RM13.775 bilion berbanding RM15.783 bilion.

Keuntungan lebih rendah itu disumbangkan bahagian petroleum dan kerugian lebih besar di bahagian kimia dan logistik bersepadunya.
Bagaimanapun, prestasi lebih baik ditunjukkan oleh bahagian LNG, pesisir pantai dan kejuruteraan berat.

Bahagian LNG mencatat peningkatan keuntungan sebelum cukai 38.3 peratus disebabkan penyusutan perbelanjaan daripada lanjutan kitaran hayat aset dan penjimatan ke atas kos operasi.

Bahagian ini dijangka mencatat prestasi kewangan memberangsangkan pada masa depan susulan kontrak sewa kapal jangka panjang.

Disebabkan tekanan ke atas kadar fret, keuntungan dicatatkan bahagian petroleum susut 88.1 peratus, manakala kerugian bahagian kimia juga turut membesar.

Kerugian bahagian logistik bersepadu meningkat tahun lalu disebabkan terutama oleh kadar fret rendah dan keluarnya syarikat itu daripada menawarkan perkhidmatan dagangan Asia-Eropah.

Bahagian pesisir pantai dan kejuruteraan berat meningkat disebabkan asas pendapatan yang terjamin dan kekukuhan kontrak semasa, menyaksikan untung sebelum cukai berkembang masing-masing sebanyak 17.9 peratus dan 7.3 peratus.

Perkembangan terkini MISC dilihat sebagai berita baik. Ia baru-baru ini memeterai perjanjian dengan Petromin PNG Shipping Ltd dari Papua New Guinea.

MISC dan Petromin PNG bercadang menubuhkan usaha sama (JV) bagi menyediakan penyelesaian perkapalan.

Syarikat JV yang akan ditubuhkan di Kepulauan Bermuda itu direka bentuk bagi memenuhi keperluan projek LNG selain menyokong keperluan perkapalan am lain di Papua New Guinea.

MISC akan menguasai 60 peratus kepentingan dalam syarikat JV yang akan dinamakan Western Pacific Shipping Ltd itu. Modal berbayarnya ialah sebanyak AS$250,000.

MISC kekal memiliki modal besar. Mengikut penganalisis di Netresearch-Asia, dengan selesainya terbitan hak bernilai RM5.2 bilion pada 10 Januari lalu, hutang bersihnya berkurangan kepada 0.2x dalam tahun kewangan 2010 daripada 0.5 kali pada Disember 2009.

Pemulihan berterusan kadar fret, katanya, akan terus merangsang pendapatan pada masa depan.

Firma itu juga mengekalkan cadangan agar pelabur terus memegang saham MISC.

Saham syarikat itu ketika ini didagangkan pada P/E 24x bagi tahun kewangan 2011.

23 April, 2010, sebuah kapal cuba mengumpul minyak di permukaan tapi minyak terus mengalir keluar dari punca kebocoran di dasar laut.

Syarikat minyak BP, pemilik telaga minyak dasar laut yang bocor akibat dari kemusnahan pelantar Deepwater Horizon, menganggarkan beribu-ribu tong minyak mengalir keluar dari kebocoran 5,000 kaki (1,524 meter) di bawah permukaan air.

Amoco Cadiz
Kapal tangki Amoco Cadiz menempuh badai dan terdampar di luar pantai Brittany, Perancis pada 16 Mac, 1978, menumpahkan 68,700,000 gelen minyak ke laut, mencemarkan sekitar 200 batu pantai Brittany.

Tumpahan Minyak di Teluk Arab
Semasa Perang Teluk 1991, tentera Iraq memusnahkan kapal tangki, terminal dan telaga minyak di Kuwait, menyebabkan pertumpahan sekitar 900,000,000 tong minyak. Ini adalah tumpahan minyak yang terbesar dalam sejarah.

Argo Merchant
Pada 15 Disember, 1976, kapal tangki Argo Merchant terdampar di Fishing Rip (Nantucket Shoals), 29 batu nautika tenggara pulau Nantucket, Massachusetts kerana angin kencang dan ombak laut yang mangganas. Enam hari kemudian, kapal itu terpecah dua dan menumpahkan semua kargo, sebanyak 7.7 juta gelen minyak yang telah ditapis.

Barge 155 Bouchard
Pada 10 Ogos, 1993, tiga kapal bertembung di Tampa Bay, Florida: kapal tangki Bouchard 155, kapal Balsa 37 dan kapal Ocean 255. Bouchard 155 menumpahkan lebih kurang 336.000 gelen minyak.

Cibro Savannah
Pada 6 Mac, 1990, kapal Savannah Cibro meletup dan terbakar ketika memulakan perjalanan dari dermaga Citgo, Linden, New Jersey. Sekitar 127.000 gelen minyak tidak tersisa selepas insiden tersebut. Tidak diketahui berapa jumlah minyak yang terbakar dan jumlah yang tertumpah ke persekitaran.

Burmah Agate
Pada 1 November, 1979, kapal tangki Burmah Agate bertembung dengan kapal Mimosa di tenggara Galveston Entrance di Teluk Mexico. Pertembungan menyebabkan letupan dan minyak terus terbakar di dalam kapal tangki Burmah Agate sehingga 8 Februari, 1980. Sebanyak lebih kurang 2,600,000 gelen minyak tertumpah dan selebihnya 7,800,000 gelen, terbakar.

Exxon Valdez
Pada 24 Mac, 1989, Exxon Valdez terdampar di Bligh Reef di Prince William Sound, Alaska. Kapal tangki tersebut dalam perjalanan di luar laluan biasa dalam usaha untuk mengelakkan ais. Menumpahkan 10,800,000 gelen minyak (dari jumlah keseluruhan, 53 juta gelen), dan memberi kesan kepada lebih daripada 1,100 batu pantai Alaska. Agensi Negara dan Persekutuan terus memantau kesan daripada tumpahan, yang merupakan tumpahan minyak yang terbesar dalam sejarah Amerika Syarikat.

Ixtoc I
Telaga minyak eksplorasi 2-batu-dalam, Ixtoc I, meletup pada 3 Jun, 1979 di Teluk Campeche di luar Ciudad del Carmen, Mexico. Di saat api dapat dipadam sepenuhmya pada Mac, 1980, dianggarkan sebanyak 140,000,000 gelen minyak tertumpah ke teluk. Jumlah tumpahan dari Ixtoc I adalah kedua terbesar selepas tumpahan minyak di Teluk Arab, 1991.

Jupiter
Pada 16 September, 1990, kapal tangki Jupiter sedang memindahkan petrol ke sebuah kilang di Sungai Saginaw berdekatan Bay City, Michigan, ketika itu lah kebakaran terjadi dan kapal meletup.

Megaborg
Kapal Megaborg menumpahkan 5,100,000 gelen minyak dalam satu kebakaran. Insiden ini berlaku 60 batu nautika selatan-tenggara Galveston, Texas pada 8 Jun, 1990.



Kejadian terbaru, terbakar dan tenggelamnya Deepwater Horizon di Teluk Mexico, 22 April, 2010 dijangka akan mencatatkan rekod dalam sejarah tumpahan minyak. Setakat ini belum ada anggaran jumlah keseluruhan limpahan minyak kerana kebocoran masih berterusan.
