7 Reasons Deck Cadets and Junior Engineers are Not

Getting Jobs

Talk to a freshly graduated junior engineer or deck cadet and I bet the only thing you would hear about is of getting a decent break (or even on any damn shitty ship would also do). They want jobs badly, I mean really bad! And why would they not? There are many who have taken loans for their maritime training and even have mortgages to clear off. In fact, that is what every one of us would do once we pass out from the college. Look for jobs! Right?

Unfortunately, the “situation of crises” has become a breeding ground for job agents and fraud shipping companies to do profitable business. They are charging $2000-$3000 dollars in return for a break; not to mention, one cannot expect it to be in some hot-shot company.Sadly, these fresh graduates have started to succumb to the situation, and have even started considering shelling out the “asked price”. Result? Some have already received the much desired break, some are looking for sources to finance them, and some have fallen prey to fraud agents and shipping companies, who have taken the money and disappeared in thin air.It’s a grim situation out there, where no one knows what to do and whom to blame. So, as the blaming-game continues, we try to pen down seven important points that we believe have been the real reason for the present dilemma.

1. Supply & Demand Imbalance

It might sound cliché, but the fact remains that the lack of equilibrium between the supply and demand of fresh professionals in the marine industry is the main reason behind the dearth of jobs, especially for newly graduates. Maritime academies are churning out marine engineers and deck cadets, doing their jobs pretty well and making huge profits, irrespective of the market condition.

However, they can’t be blamed because one cannot shut the institute for one year and then re-open it again whenever the need arises. Today, the need for deck cadets is less, tomorrow it can be more. So who is to blame? Probably the authority that gives the permission to open new institutes every month is at fault. However, the bottom line is until a balance is created between the demand and supply of seafarers, the scarcity of jobs will persist.

2. Inability of the Governmental Authority to take Concrete Steps

Governmental authorities should take concrete steps to solve the issue of unemployment for the fresh graduates. Or else, merchant navy would slowly lose its position as a prospective career option among students (The fact is it has already lost its lustre to a certain extent).

It is high time the government take a stand to help the freshly graduated cadets and engineers for getting placed in decent companies. Until this is done, both agents and shipping companies will not miss a single opportunity to earn profits from maritime professionals. Government needs to intervene and help these professionals with a decent break.

3. Lack of References = No Job Offer

Shocking but true, the trend of getting jobs using references is still a hot favourite method of getting a decent job. There have been several cases wherein average students have got jobs in top shipping companies because they have father or uncle working there as chief engineer or captain; whereas bright students are still jobless because either they don’t have a god father in the industry or lack hundred of dollars to pay as bribe.

Either ways, an unjust and unfair condition is being created which is eventually making the present situation grimmer. Though people might shout slogans against corruption or even get themselves enrolled in a debate against the same, the fact is, when it comes to personal level, the definition of immorality changes, drastically.

4. Shipping Companies Showing No Respect for Fresh Graduates

Let’s face the fact that a certain shipping company hires a fresh graduate with the sole intention and hope to retain him or her as a third officer or a fourth engineer once the necessary certifications are achieved. The companies don’t entertain newly graduates as respect to the degree or training they have. Don’t believe me? Visit a shipping company or a ship and see how the cadets and junior engineers are treated and you would get to know what I mean. We agree that they are fresh and naive, but they are future officers and captains. Give them their due respect.The moral of the story is until the companies stop treating young professionals as “liabilities”, the loyalty will not have a place in employer-employee relationship, leading to reduction in retaining power of the company. Give respect, and get respect in return.

5. Unwillingness/Inability to Enter a Different Market

Unlike other fields, wherein graduates have options to enter other industries and domains, a seafarer is left with no other choice than to stick with the same field. Merchant navy is a specialized field, where only two types of people are found – one who loves money and one who loves the sea. So once a person shells out hundreds of dollars for his maritime training, he or she is least interested to explore other fields wherein the starting salary wouldn’t be even half of that offered in merchant navy. Moreover, the glamour attached with the field is also something that holds back maritime professionals to explore other domains. Try talking to a dozen of mariners; each one would talk about leaving the field, but I bet none would do so. Probably that’s why they say, “Once a mariner, always a mariner.” Moral of the story- there are several other opportunities as well. One needs to look beyond his or her mental block.

But this is just one side of the story. Most of the fresh maritime professionals won’t be able to land themselves with a decent job on land because the skilled they acquired are of no use on land. A marine engineer might be able to find a way, but a deck cadet will have a tough time making his way through the highly competitive market on land.

6. Improper/Inadequate Training

This might come a bit blunt on the fresh cadets and engineers. But lately there have been a huge lapse in the quality of cadets and engineers that maritime institutes are producing. Ask shipping companies, and they have a list of complains about fresh graduates. Probably that is just an excuse on their part; probably it is true, but the fact is maritime institutes today are more interested in quantity than quality. They believe a certificate is all that one needs to run a ship at sea, irrespective of the kind of training and skills a mariner has.

Though it’s true that experience is the best teacher, a fresh seafarer should have the basic skills to ensure his or her safety on ship. Most of the fresh seamen are still “Alice in wonderland” when on ship, increasing shipping companies belief that they really are nothing but “liabilities”. But the cadets and engineers are not the only ones to blame. It’s the slack policies of institutes that are to blame. And until these institutes tighten the loose ends, the shipping companies will not show their trust in the fresh graduates.

7. Maritime Institutes Flaunting Fake Promises

How often have you seen maritime institutes flaunting one liner such as 100% placement Guaranteed? Always, right? And how often have you seen the same institutes going back on their words when they are not able to provide placements? Same – always! Like every field, institutes in the marine industry have also learned the ropes of the game to allure more students to their courses. They know how to attract students by giving fake promises or showing big starting salary figures, without debriefing them about their future career or life at sea. Every year more and more students are falling prey to this traps and finding themselves stuck in a catch22 situation. End Result: Dissatisfaction, depression, and of course – the great unemployment! Deck cadets and junior engineers are the lifeline of the maritime industry. With the higher rank holders showing less of interest in the sea life and moving towards land jobs, these fresh graduates would have to be at the helm of the industry one day. It is high time the authority took some drastic steps to give these professionals their due respect and place in the maritime industry.

MISC to Exit Container Shipping After $789 Million in Losses

MISC Bhd., Asia’s largest shipping line by market value, said it will stop operating container vessels after the unit lost $789 million in three years.

The move will result in a one-off $400 million charge this year and a full-year loss, Kuala Lumpur-based MISC, controlled by Malaysia’s state oil company Petroliam Nasional Bhd., said in a statement today. Operations will halt by the end of June.

“It’s a good thing for them in the mid-to-long term,” said Firdaus Hisham, a Macquarie Securities Ltd. analyst in Kuala Lumpur. “The margins were never that attractive.”

MISC also said second-quarter net income fell 62 percent from a year earlier to 140.9 million ringgit ($44 million) as losses from carrying containers offset profits at units operating liquefied natural gas tankers and building offshore facilities. Mitsui O.S.K. Lines Ltd. and Nippon Yusen K.K. have also announced container-shipping capacity cuts this year as tumbling rates cause industrywide losses.

“In view of the expected larger demand of investment in the liner industry, the cost for us to remain relevant in the liner business is untenable,” MISC Chief Executive Officer Nasarudin Md Idris said in an e-mailed statement today.

MISC Fleet

MISC had 30 container ships in its fleet of 173 vessels as of Nov. 1, according to its website. The company also had 29 LNG ships, 83 petroleum tankers and 28 chemical tankers.

The shipping line reorganized its container business in January 2010 by exiting Asia-Europe routes to focus on intra- Asia services.

MISC halted its stock in Kuala Lumpur ahead of the announcement. The shares have fallen 27 percent this year, worse than a 5 percent drop in the benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI Index.

The company’s sales dropped to 2.6 billion ringgit in the three months ended Sept. 30 from 3.1 billion ringgit a year earlier, it said. Its container unit had a 313 million ringgit operating loss compared with a 454.5 million ringgit operating profit in energy-shipping.

More than 50 countries to participate in UAE counter-piracy conference

With new attacks on vessels happening daily, government and industry leaders representing over 50 countries will on Monday, April 18 group in Dubai to seek meaningful solutions to the serious humanitarian and economic issue of piracy in the first high-level public-private counter piracy conference to be held in the region on the widespread threats of piracy and collaborative means to eradicate it. Co-convened by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs and global marine terminal operator DP World, His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates, and His Excellency Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, Chairman, DP World, will inaugurate the two day conference. It brings together officials and industry leaders from more than 50 countries for high level deliberations. Under the theme “Global Challenge, Regional Responses: Forging A Common Approach to Maritime Piracy”, the summit will be attended by more than 30 foreign ministers, including from the GCC countries, senior representatives from a further 25 countries, the United Nations, the International Maritime Organisation, scores of industry leaders and international experts on maritime security and community development issues.
Included are the Foreign Ministers of most GCC countries, the Foreign Ministers of states directly affected by piracy such as Somalia, Djibouti, the Comoros, and Tanzania, the United Nations Deputy Secretary General, and Foreign Ministers from major international players such as Indonesia, Nigeria, and Pakistan. Those from the maritime industry
attending include Morten Engelstoft, COO, Maersk, Peter Swift, President, International Association of Independent Tanker Owners, Ron Widdows, President, and CEO of Neptune Orient Lines (NOL) and Chairman, World Shipping Council, Dr Stefano Messina, CEO, Messina Line and Giles Noakes, Chief Maritime Security Officer, BIMCO. Experts participating include Dr Martin Murphy, Kings College, London, and Pottengal Mukundan, Director, International Maritime Bureau, amongst others.
During the conference, both public and private initiatives to counter the devastating effects of piracy on the captives and their families and communities as well as the threat it poses to peace and security internationally will be discussed, with the aim of introducing initiatives that merge the efforts of both sectors in areas of community
development, security, and information sharing. Panel discussions will also tackle root causes of piracy, relevant international law issues, and opportunities of furthering civilian-military cooperation to ward off attacks. On the sidelines of the conference, the UAE and the United Nations will hold a fundraising session in support of the UN’s Trust Fund to Support Initiatives of States Countering Piracy off the Coast of Somalia. The aim of the fundraiser is to attract new and traditional donors to the Fund, which was established in January 2010 by the UN Secretary-General at the request of the international Contact Group on Piracy off the Coast of Somalia.
The Trust Fund has launched a number of land-based counter piracy initiatives established and supported by both public and private sectors. In this vein, UAE Foreign Ministry officials have revealed that the UAE will make a significant contribution to the UN Trust Fund at the conference in reflection of its ongoing commitment to the international efforts
in the field of counter-piracy. The conference is also expected to conclude with a declaration outlining areas of cooperation between the private and public sectors with the aim of establishing a working frame to further advance cooperation in various counter piracy initiatives as well as propose others. The UAE’s position as a global hub for trade
and commerce together with its significant regional and international partnerships are expected to make the event a key platform for the coordination of the urgent international response to end the far reaching and devastating threats of piracy.
According to the International Maritime Bureau, as of April 14, 2011 and despite a heightened level of international response, there were at least 107 incidents of attacks or attempted attacks on commercial cargo ships in the Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea and off the east African coast – with 17 vessels hijacked. At least 26 ships are currently estimated
to be under pirate control, together with 532 mariners held captive, many in appalling conditions. In addition to the devastating human cost of piracy, the financial cost to global trade is also huge, with estimates as high as US$12 billion a year.

Nine piracy incidents at sea occurred in Malaysia in the first quarter of 2011, including the hijacking of a tugboat and barge off Tioman Island.Vessels were also boarded in seven incidents by robbers armed with guns and knives, said the director of the International Maritime Bureau (IMB), Captain Pottengal Mukundan, Thursday. He said piracy at sea had hit an all-time high in the first three months of this year with 142 attacks worldwide where 18 vessels were hijacked, 344 crew members taken hostage, and six kidnapped. Another 45 vessels were boarded and 45 more reported being fired upon, he said in the statement. "The sharp rise was driven by a surge in piracy off the coast of Somalia where 97 attacks were recorded, up from 35 in the same period last year. Figures for piracy and armed robbery at sea in the past three months were higher than we had ever
recorded in the first quarter of any year," he said. The IMB's Piracy Reporting Centre which has monitored piracy worldwide since 1991, also reported that during the same period, pirates had murdered seven crew members and injured 34 compared with just two injuries in 2006. Mukundan said of the 18 ships hijacked during the period, 15 were
captured off the east of Somalia, in and around the Arabian Sea and one in the Gulf of Aden. "In this area alone, 299 people were taken hostage and six more were kidnapped from their vessel," he said, adding that at the last count on March 31, IMB figures showed that Somali pirates were holding captive 596 crew members on 28 ships. He noted that
there were also a dramatic increase in violence and techniques used by pirates in the seas off Somalia. "The overwhelming number of vessels hijcked off Somalia took place east and northeast of the Gulf of Aden. The positions of some of the attackers' mother ships are known. It is vital that strong action is taken against these mother ships to
prevent further hijackings," he said. Mukundan also said that large tankers carrying oil and other flammable chemicals were particularly vulnerable to firearms attacks. "Three big tankers of over 100,000 tonnes deadweight had been hijacked off the Horn of Africa this year. Of a total of 97 vessels attacked in this region, 37 were tankers and of these, 20 had a deadweight of more that 100,000 tonnes," he said. Elsewhere, he said the Indian navy captured 61 Somalia pirates on a hijacked ship off India's west coast, while Nigeria recorded five incidents with three attacks against vessels in Lagos. "Crews in the area are reporting increased violence, including one incident where all 27 crew members were injured. "IMB's concern about an expansion of Nigeria-style piracy has been heightened by the hijacking of a chemical tanker off neighbouring Benin, which its captors finally directed to Lagos," he said.

Portside and Starboard side of a ship

Most of you might have heard the term Portside and Starboard side in relation to a ship.. These are actuallynautical terms which refer to the left and right side of the ship respectively when you are looking towards theBow (the front of the ship – also known as Fore).. The rear of the ship is termed as Stern (also known as Aft)..

There are many answers as to the evolution of the names Port & Starboard as below..

As per Wikipedia, before ships had rudders on their centerlines, they were steered by use of a specialized steering oar.. This oar was held by an oarsman located in the stern (back) of the ship.. However, like most of society, there were many more right-handed sailors than left-handed sailors. This meant that the steering oar (which had been broadened to provide better control) used to be affixed to the right side of the ship..

The term Port was derived from the practice of sailors mooring ships on the left side at ports in order to prevent the steering oar from being crushed..

From the Longboat museum in Oslo it is learned that a viking longboat was steered by a large wooden plank called a “steer board”.. The modern day equivelent is a “tiller” or “rudder”.. The steer-board was operated by the helmsman facing forward and, since most people are right-handed, he would naturally hold the steer-board in his right hand.. Since the steer-board was always on the right, the righthand side of the vessle became known as the steer-board side..

Subsequently the term “steer-board” blended into the English language and evolved into “starboard”..

Another version is that, in the olden days before the advent of maps, navigation was done by following the arrangement of stars in the sky.. Usually old sailing ships had long masts & sails which disturbed the visibility of the helmsman and the sailors arranged a deck extending out on the right side to watch the stars & continue sailing.. So one person on the ship used to read the location of the starts sitting on the deck & convey the same to the Helmsman.. The deck that was used to look at the stars and decide the sailing route was termed as starboard deck.. Because of this extended deck on the right side, only the other side of the ship could be brought towards the port and it was named as portside..

Once the modern centerpost rudder was developed, it was no longer necessary to dock with the vessel’s portside to port.. Ships now dock starboard or portside alongside..

Another bit of interesting information is that the Starboard side has Green navigation lights and port side has Red navigation lights and the Aft of the ship has a white light.. If there are two vessels approaching each other head-on, each should alter course to starboard, so that they pass each other port-to-port unless otherwise communicated much like the rules of the road..

Disaat kita sah berumah tangga..hati mula merancang untuk menimbang cahaya mata..mengimpikan anak yg lahir dari ikatan suci murni antara isteri dan suami..alangkah indah tatkala disahkan sudah berbadan dua..gembiranya hati tidak dpt digambarkan.lebih indah jika saat dikhabarkan berita gembira si suami ada disisi...bersama merasa betapa syukur dan sayunya dikurniakan Allah rezeki yg sangat bermakna ini..tapi adakala,dalam perjalanan selama 9 bulan tu..terpaksa kita menempuhnya sendirian..:(

Hidup kita sebagai isteri pelaut bukannya mudah.Tiap dugaan dikala mengandung sendirian tanpa suami cukup menguji ketabahan hati.teringat saat saya mengandungkan wafiy dulu.Hubby pergi belayar ketika saya pregnant 4 bulan.Alahan punyalaa teruk. Tiap masa tak kira pagi petang malam muntah jer.Tiap malam masa awal2 hubby pergi tu saya menangis sendirian.sedih sangat..lebih sedih bila mula2 dapat merasa wafiy bergerak..hubby tak ada untuk turut merasa.sayunya hati..Tapi saya kuatkan hati kerana saya tahu ada lagi isteri2 yg senasib dengan saya yg turut kuat menghadapi dugaan ni.Bila saya dah masuk 9 bulan..Hubby kemungkinan besar tidak dapat balik kerana tak ada reliever.saya berdoa sentiasa moga hubby ada dikala saya bertaruh nyawa melahirkan anak kami.

MISC names new IMO II Chemical Tankers

MISC Berhad (MISC) held the naming ceremony of its 10th Chemical tanker, Bunga Allium. The 38,000 dwt tanker is the third in a series of eight IMO II chemical tankers

ordered from the STX shipyard in South Korea by MISC. Bunga Allium was recently delivered on 5 January 2010 and has sailed on her first voyage from South Korea to Pasir Gudang. Her delivery brings the number of MISC's owned and in-chartered Chemical tankers to 21, further strengthening MISC's position as a reliable and safe transporter of chemicals and vegetable oils.

The coming into service of Bunga Allium is part of MISC's rapid chemical fleet expansion programme, which will see MISC receiving a total of 15 chemical tankers over the next 2 years. These additional vessels will provide MISC with the critical mass required to better serve its customers globally and at the same time, allow MISC to expand its global presence. Similar to her sister vessels, Bunga Akasia and Bunga Alamanda, which were delivered last year, Bunga Allium is well-suited to carry a wide variety of vegetable oil, chemical and CPP cargoes, thus, increasing its service offerings and competitiveness in the chemical shipping industry.

The naming ceremony was officiated by Ms. Ngau Sue Ching, daughter of Mr. Ngau Boon Keat, Chairman of Dialog Group (Dialog). MISC and Dialog are joint venture partners in developing, managing and operating a tank terminal at the Port of Tanjung Langsat, Johor, Malaysia. The first phase operation of the Tanjung Langsat terminal was launched in September 2009 and the second phase is currently underway and targeted for completion in April 2010. MISC has also recently entered into a joint-venture with VTTI Tanjung Bin S.A, a subsidiary of Vitol Tank Terminals International B.V. (VTTI), part of the leading international energy trading group, Vitol, to jointly construct, commission and operate an oil terminal with a base capacity of approximately 741,200 cubic meters at Tanjung Bin, Johor, Malaysia.

The naming ceremony was held at the Malaysia Marine and Heavy Engineering (MMHE) Yard in Pasir Gudang, Johor. MMHE, a subsidiary of MISC, is a regional leader in marine and heavy engineering and through MMHE, MISC is one of the few shipping companies in the world with the capability to offer in-house dry-docking and refurbishment to its vessel, ensuring their reliability in service.

MISC wins case againts Equatorial

In the case of Equatorial Marine Fuel Management Services Pte Ltd (Equatorial) v MISC Berhad (MISC), the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit has ruled in favour of MISC,

upholding the fact that MISC did not enter into any contract for the supply of bunker with Equatorial, hence there being no basis for the admiralty action brought against MISC by Equatorial.

The decision of the appeal was handed down last week by the Ninth Circuit three judge panel, who unanimously upheld the United States District Court for the Central District of California's vacatur of Equatorial's maritime attachment to MISC's property, M/T Bunga Kasturi Lima.

This much eagerly awaited decision is warmly welcomed by all shipping giants globally as no physical supplier can now arrest vessels without the presence of proper legally binding contract supported by sufficient evidentiary documents, causing grave commercial strain on the ship owners.

The legal battle between the two companies began in April 2008, when Equatorial attached M/T Bunga Kasturi Lima, a vessel belonging to MISC in Long Beach, California, to acquire jurisdiction over MISC and to obtain security for their claim. Equatorial alleged that MISC breached a contract purportedly entered into between Equatorial and MISC. Equatorial specifically asserted that MISC had purchased bunker from Equatorial and Equatorial had delivered the bunker fuels to MISC's vessels for over USD 22 million. It is further alleged that MISC never paid Equatorial for the various deliveries.

It was always the contention of MISC that it had no direct relationship with Equatorial. MISC entered into a contract for the purchase of bunker with Market Asia Link Sdn Bhd ("MAL"), a separate and unaffiliated company. In addition MISC received invoices from, and made remittances directly, to MAL for all bunkers supplied to the various vessels. The fact that MAL procured its bunker supply from Equatorial is immaterial. MISC was never provided with copies of Equatorial's invoices, and thus there was no contractual nexus between MISC and Equatorial. Hence based on the fact that Equatorial failed to show that it had a valid prima facie admiralty claim, the US District Court of California vacated the attachment. However, Equatorial appealed against the decision to the US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit which is the highest Federal Court in California.

In a published decision, written by Chief Judge Kozinski, the Ninth Circuit panel concluded that the District Court properly vacated the attachment because Equatorial failed to carry its burden of showing it had stated a valid prima facie breach of contract (or a contract at all when applying the evidentiary standard) against MISC.

Following the positive outcome of this case, MISC will now focus on pursuing a legal claim for approximately USD 500,000.00 against Equatorial for all damages caused as a result of wrongful attachment of MISC's vessel.

Only best people can go to sea.

Many seafarers are asked how they ended up at sea! Just like somebody may ask a teacher or a bricklayer why he or she became one, the answers tend to be varied and often without path to the end result. One common reason for entering a particular career is because "my father did it and so did my grandfather". Some extremely obvious reasons for going to sea might have been to get away from home or to see the world; equally so many rusty seafarers today embarked upon their careers for lack of anything else to do, because some cranky careers advisor suggested they do so or because they had been recently dumped by the school hottie!
Seafarers are molded from any number of reasons with many having no clue as to whether they will become an engineer, mate or cook even after they have decided to sign up! Whilst others have had the sea in their blood since the day they were conceived.

The Industry has changed though. Many a salty seafarer will prop up the local bars in seaside towns the world over. They will regale those who will listen with stories that baffle and defy gravity, they will accept drinks from anybody who offers and in return will tell them "it's not like it used to be". And they are correct! Life at sea has changed dramatically in the last ten years and many (especially the old-timers) will say that it's not for the better.

Yes, the industry has changed and probably faster than when the steamship came along and rang the death knell on the sail ships. Ten years ago everybody decided that seafarers were suffering from stress, that ships should run like shore-based establishments and that people should be accountable for their actions; i.e. a paper trail should be laid. Ten years ago paperwork on ships was nothing more than the daily log; the typing of the monthly stores order onto the telex machine and some night orders hastily scribbled by the captain after has last gin and tonic of the night! And modern communications have brought ships into the civilized world. Ten years ago only cruise ships and research vessel could afford the large golf-ball satellite dishes on the monkey island, now all ships have them and the companies send emails and make telephone calls, not daily but the whole day, to the extent that captains and mates are now short of a secretary or two were once they were short of something to do!

Then, in these days of heightened safety cultures alcohol was suddenly frowned upon and the sustenance that kept many engineers and mates together and in one piece was removed from their grasp, a forbidden item that was to be no more.

It has not stopped there. As a result of 9-11, the terrorist attack on the world Trade Center in New York, the bureaucrats ashore rapidly suggested that ships could be used as potential bomb carriers (a laden gas tanker running up the St. Lawrence Seaway with a bomb onboard could cause untold loss of life and damage) and so ships and the people that sail them suddenly received a whole new host of regulations to follow and associated paperwork to fill in. The Chief Officers, once a figurehead to be frightened of, now has many hats to wear - safety officer, loading master and now the security officer!

Before the last ten years brought paperwork to ships and before masters found themselves in front of a computer more often than looking out of the bridge window, certain idealistic facets of a life-at-sea were conjured up in many minds! A wife in every port maybe? Cruising across the Atlantic sipping sherry on the mezzanine deck after having had a quick dip in the pool? A week in Tripoli, a Caribbean cruise and picking bananas before heading home to Barry (a port in Wales not the boyfriend)? It all sounds very nice, doesn't it?

Not many ships have swimming pools these days! If they do they won't have the sherry to drink! And anyway not many ships stay long enough in port these days to allow anybody to go ashore! Time is precious and port stays cost money!

Is there any reason why anybody should go to sea these days and if so what for?
As the paperwork and the bureaucracy have increased tenfold so has the nature of the job changed! Senior officers are now accountable for their actions, the bosses ashore are equally accountable for theirs, and so responsibility tends to lie where it is born and bred than shifted down to the lowest man in the pile! For those entering the business today this is fantastic, a clear cut and structured path ahead were everything is black and white - for those complaining about the change it is often due to an inability to take the change onboard, to grasp it and to realize that it is for their benefit too and not something forced upon them by a bunch of non-seafaring types ashore with nothing better to do with themselves except make up silly regulations.

Many would say that in their younger years they fell in love the world over, many would also say that they caught every disease imaginable that they were ripped off more times than they could count and that for the most part they couldn't remember anything anyway as they were too pissed! Most shore leaves were spent in alcoholic oblivion; the girl's of the night equally pissed but with a sober eye on the guy's wallet.

Life at sea has changed. Trips are more structured and the seafarers more professional than they ever were - life onboard depends on the individuals and how they accept the life, a life that no longer depends on crates of booze and alcoholic oblivion! Modern communications allow for easy access to phone calls home, no more waiting until land is seen and a painful session of calling up land based radio stations is enacted; the future states that all ships will have twenty-four hour internet access, with vessels looking towards wireless access for all onboard. Trips are getting shorter and the leave longer; the laughable idea of going to sea for ten months and having one month at home has been nearly replaced with equal time on and equal time off!
Work for six months of the year on a tax free salary?

And so why would seafarers go to sea today? They go because it is an honest career that brings the bread and butter onto the table. There might not be a wife in every port, the company may require the same written entries to be made in about six different books and logs and the Chief Engineer might be a grumpy old sod because he can't have drink but …….wow, what a life to be had!

PENUBUHAN mahkamah khusus bagi menyelesaikan kes sivil berkaitan industri maritim, baru-baru ini, mampu memacu pertumbuhan agresif dalam sektor perkapalan negara, kata Timbalan Menteri Pengangkutan, Datuk Abdul Rahim Bakri.

Beliau berkata, penubuhan mahkamah itu adalah inisiatif khas kerajaan bagi memastikan industri perkapalan tempatan kekal relevan dan berdaya saing pada peringkat antarabangsa.

Katanya, pelbagai isu dan kerugian pihak industri dapat dielakkan apabila sesuatu kes berlaku di perairan negara dapat diselesaikan dengan segera tanpa perlu menunggu giliran di mahkamah sivil seperti sebelum ini.

“Sektor perkapalan menjadi nadi pengangkutan perdagangan antarabangsa yang mewakili 95 peratus, justeru kerajaan bersedia menyediakan asas baik dan menarik kepada pihak industri bagi memastikan negara mencapai pertumbuhan baik, manfaat daripada potensi ini.

“Antaranya menerusi komitmen mewujudkan integriti dalam industri ini kerana sebarang kelewatan membabitkan perundangan sivil di perairan ini akan menyebabkan kapal tidak beroperasi dan ia akan mendatangkan pelbagai masalah dan kerugian kepada pihak pengusaha serta kerajaan,” katanya selepas merasmikan Pameran dan Persidangan Maritim dan Logistik Asia Keenam 2010 di Kuala Lumpur, semalam.

Sementara itu, Abdul Rahim berkata, kerajaan menyasarkan isu lebihan kapal berbanding permintaan akibat krisis ekonomi, baru-baru ini, akan selesai dalam tempoh satu hingga dua tahun lagi.

Katanya, berdasarkan petunjuk ekonomi negara pengeluar dunia semakin memberangsangkan disokong pemulihan kuasa besar ekonomi.
“Kerajaan menyedari krisis ekonomi dunia telah menjejaskan syarikat perkapalan di Malaysia dan juga Asia, namun sasaran keluar dari kesan krisis ini adalah optimistik berdasarkan kepada pengeluar antarabangsa yang bersedia meningkatkan eksport mereka,” katanya.

Pengerusi Persatuan Pemilik Kapal Malaysia (MASA), Ir. Nordin Mat Yusoff, berkata walaupun tempahan pengangkutan perkapalan global terus menunjukkan penurunan kepada 7,495 kapal pada awal September lalu, iaitu nilai terendah sejak 2006, beberapa negara utama dalam industri sudah mula bangkit memperoleh tempahan baru.

Katanya, negara seperti Korea Selatan, Jepun dan China dilaporkan sudah pulih untuk menerima tempahan perkhidmatan baru khususnya bagi kapal jenis kontena dan tangki yang akan memberi kesan pengurangan tawaran perkhidmatan dalam tempoh tiga tahun bermula 2012.

Syarikat Perkapalan Harus Tingkatkan Usaha

KUALA LUMPUR – Bekas Perdana Menteri Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad hari ini menggesa syarikat perkapalan tempatan agar menggiatkan usaha menarik mereka yang berminat menjadi pelaut menyertai profesion itu.

“Orang ramai perlu tahu pelaut adalah profesion yang mulia dengan potensi yang besar dan peluang kerjaya yang banyak,” katanya ketika berucap pada jamuan malam sambutan jubli perak Institut Kelautan Malaysia (Ikmal), di sini malam ini.

Dr Mahathir berkata bilangan pelaut tempatan sedia ada masih belum mencukupi untuk menampung keperluan armada Malaysia.

Buat masa ini armada Malaysia mengandungi lebih 4,700 buah kapal dagang dan lebih 1,000 daripadanya terlibat dengan perdagangan antarabangsa, kata beliau.

“Sekarang berdasarkan rekod, kita ada sekitar 20,000 pelaut tempatan tetapi kebanyakan berkhidmat untuk perdagangan domestik. Pada masa yang sama kebergantungan kita kepada pelaut asing berterusan dan tahun ini sahaja kita ada lebih 9,500 orang berkhidmat di atas kapal kita,” katanya.

Mereka katanya, menyumbang secara signifikan kepada sektor ekonomi dan bukan saja profesional dalam melakukan kerja tetapi juga boleh digunakan untuk melatih tenaga kerja tempatan dalam usaha Malaysia mencapai status negara maju pada 2020.

“Tidak perlu diperkatakan bahawa kita wajar mempunyai tenaga kerja terlatih, berkemahiran tinggi, cekap dan bermotivasi tinggi agar dapat memacu negara kita,” katanya.

Justeru kata Dr Mahathir, badan profesional seperti Ikmal harus mempromosikan rasa bangga sebagai golongan profesional dalam diri pelatih sedia ada dan juga bakal rekrut. – BERNAMA

A. Incomplete Sea Time

Cadets who have done sea time between 10 to 12 months are allowed to proceed to Semester 5. They may continue their sea time during Semester 5 break or after Semester 6.
Cadets who have done less than 10 months sea time, they are required to continue with their ship berth phase. They may register for Semester 5 in April 2011, PROVIDED that they have completed the required sea time by then. If they still have not completed their sea time by April 2011, then they are to continue with their sea time and may register for Semester 5 in December 2011.

B. New Reporting Date for Semester 5 (DNS 11 and DME 25)

For Cadets who have completed their sea time and those who fall under category A1 above, their reporting date for Semester 5 has been postponed from 26th December 2010 to 2nd January 2011. This decision was made for the convenience of the Cadets and they must report on 2nd January 2011 for an Induction course.

Gempa bumi 8.9 skala Richter cetuskan Tsunami di Jepun

Gempa bumi bermagnitud 8.9 itu melanda Jepun hari ini, mencatatkan ketinggian ombak 10 meter yang mengakibatkan kapal tercampak ke pesisir pantai. Setakat ni berita terkini AFP melaporkan seramai 60 orang pulak mangsa tsunami di Sendai Jepun terbunuh, manakala 56 orang hilang, jumlah ni mungkin akan meningkat lagi.

Jabatan Meteorologi Malaysia dalam satu kenyataan mengesahkan bahawa gempa bumi kuat bermagnitud 8.8 pada skala Richter yang berlaku di pantai Honshu, Jepun pada jam 1.46 petang tidak menimbulkan ancaman tsunami kepada Malaysia.

Laporan media asing berkata, gegaran gempa bumi yang kuat melanda Jepun dan menggoncang bangunan-bangunan di Tokyo selama beberapa minit dan memaksa orang ramai meninggalkan kediaman mereka.

Laporan awal melaporkan satu gegaran dengan magnitud 7.9 tetapi ditingkatkan kepada magnitud 8.8, yang melanda negara itu kira-kira 400km dari Tokyo.

ALAM hanya menawarkan diploma dalam bidang Diploma in Nautica Study(DNS) ataupun Diploma in Marine Engineering (DME). Jika anda ingin belajar di ALAM, anda perlu mengikuti semula kursus kadet tersebut dalam bidang Diploma bermaksud Diploma anda dalam bidang perakaunan sebelum ini tidak membawa apa2 makana (xlaku untuk memohon ALAM) anda perlu apply semula menggunakan sijil SPM. Kursus kadet di ALAM dalam jangka masa 3 tahun.

Berapa ramai itu bergantung kepada permintaan dari agensi-agensi syarikat tempatan yang memerlukan engineer commonly pelajar bridging marine engineering akan menjadi electrician engineer di atas kapal. Anda akan terus bekerja dalam syarikat berkenaan dan gaji minimum bagi electrician engineer rm4500 (bergantung kepada syarikat anda)

Tahniah kerana berjaya melayakan diri belajar di ALAM.Untuk pertanyaan soalan anda adik tidak boleh menukar sponsor yang telah anda terima. Anda sama sekali tidak boleh mencari penaja dari syarikat lain disebabkan anda telah menerima tajaan dari MISC.

Anda akan menerima surat tawaran dari ALAM jika anda layak mengikuti program yang anda pohon. Anda perlu menunggu sekurang-kurangnya 2 atau 3 minggu sebelum menerima tawaran tersebut.

Borang kemasukan adalah secara online. Apabila iklan disiarkan anda boleh mendapatkan borang berkenaan di website rasmi ALAM. Selalunya iklan akan dikeluarkan selepas dapatnya keputusan SPM. anda perlu alert kerana iklan hanya disiarkan hanya sekali sahaja.

Bagi kelasi course mereka selama 3 bulan di ALAM. Mereka disebut sebagaiRating.Selalunya mereka akan dipilih melalui di IKBM, IKM dan sebagainya. Terdapat 3 course yang ditawarkan iaitu deck, engine dan catering. Jika berminat anda boleh terus menghubungi pihak terus ALAM dan bertanyakan tarikh pengambilan rating kerana course ini tidak sama dengan couse tajaan Kadet.

Prospek kerjaya sememangnya di atas kapal. Ada akan disponsor oleh mana-mana syrikat perkapalan dalam adau luar negara.Peratusan pengambilan ALAM bergantung juga sebagai contoh Batch DNS 010 memiliki paling ramai kadet dalam sejarah pengambilan ALAM iaitu hampir 200 kadet (bagi jurusan Diploma in Nautica sahaja tidak termasuk Marine Engineering) dan untuk DNS 012 hanya 100 Kadet sahaja. Ini bergatung kepada syarikat-syarikat perkapalan yang mahu menaja kadet. Diploma kejuruteraan Marine akan ditempatkan di Batu Rakit, Terengganu bukan di main campus Sg.Baru Melaka. Program ini selama 3 tahun (diploma) iaitu sehatun di ALAM tahun kedua belayar dana tahun ketiga di Akademi semula.

1) Selepas mendapat keputusan percubaan SPM anda perlu alert kerana iklan kemasukan ALAM hanya akan di siarkan sekali sahaja di dalam Akhbar.

2) Susah atau tidak bergantung kepada keputusan SPM anda danLuck anda ketika interview nanti.

3) Layak.Selepas memasuki ALAM kursus renand akan diadakan.

1) What is ALAM?
ALAM is the abbreviation for Akademi Laut Malaysia or Malaysian Maritime Academy, a
maritime institution which trains SPM leavers to become deck officers or marine engineers
onboard merchant ships.

2) Where is ALAM situated?
ALAM Main Campus is situated at Kuala Sungai Baru, overlooking the busy straits of
Melaka; approximately 148km south of Kuala Lumpur and 152km north of Singapore.
ALAM branch campus is located at Batu Rakit, Terengganu. The Melaka campus conducts
the Diploma in Nautical Studies programme whereas the Terengganu branch campus
conducts the Diploma in Marine Engineering programme.

3) Can applicants with STPM, Diploma and Degree apply for the cadetship programme?
Yes, they are encouraged to apply as long as they meet the entry requirements.

4) Can female students join ALAM?
Yes, ALAM has opened its doors to female students since 2006. Female students now have
the same opportunity as the male students.

5) Is ALAM similar to the Royal Navy?
No, ALAM trains our students to become seagoing professionals sailing onboard merchant
ships whereas the Royal Navy trains their candidates to serve and protect the country.

6) What are the cadetship programmes offered by ALAM for SPM leavers?
• Diploma in Nautical Studies
• Diploma in Marine Engineering

7) What is the duration for the cadetship programmes?
3 years for both Diploma in Nautical Studies and Diploma in Marine Engineering

8) Are all the students studying at ALAM fully sponsored?
Yes, all students who passed the interview process, medical check up and the orientation
programme will be fully sponsored by shipping companies, government agencies, port
operators, oil/gas companies or offshore oil and gas marine support vessels operators.
However, the students who do not get sponsorship can opt to pay on their own.

9) What will the sponsorship cover?
The sponsorship will cover the tuition fees, accommodation, meals, uniform, books, monthly
allowance and the modular courses.

10) Will the students be bonded and how long is the contract?
Yes, the students will be bonded and the contract differs from one sponsor to another but in
the range of 8 – 10 years.

11) Can the students opt to self sponsor?
Yes, students who do not get sponsorship can opt to pay on their own.

12) What would be the cost if students self sponsor?
The cost for the whole duration of 3 years is RM70,000.

13) How is the interview process?
The interview process will include:-
i) Colour blind Test
ii) Written test in English Language, Mathematics and Physics
iii) Psychometric Test
iv) Structured Interview
Upon getting through the interview process and the medical check-up, the candidates will
have to undergo a 3-week Induction Programme at ALAM.

14) What is the medium for all studies at ALAM?
All studies will be in English Language.

15) Must all students sail after finishing their studies at ALAM?
It will depend on who are their sponsors. However, majority of the students will have to sail
until they have fully served their contract with the sponsors. They may opt to work shore base

Lanun Somalia di bawa bicara di Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, 24 Jan -- Tujuh orang lanun Somalia yang ditahan oleh Angkatan Tentera Malaysia (ATM) di Teluk Aden Jumaat lepas kerana merampas kapal dagang MT Bunga Laurel dijangka tiba di negara ini Isnin depan untuk diadili.
Menurut Menteri Pertahanan Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, kesemua mereka yang kini dalam perjalanan dijangka tiba di Pelabuhan Klang.

"Sebaik tiba mereka akan diserahkan kepada Polis Diraja Malaysia untuk tindakan lanjut," katanya

Dalam kejadian serang lanun tersebut, ATM berjaya menyelamatkan MT Bunga Laurel selepas dua jam ia ditawan lanun kira-kira 300 batu nautika (555 kilometer) di timur Oman.

Misi menyelamat itu dilakukan bersama oleh kapal bantuan dan tugas-tugas khas Tentera Laut Diraja Malaysia (TLDM), Bunga Mas 5 di dalam Operasi Fajar yang ditugaskan memberi perlindungan kepada kapal MT Bunga Laurel ketika ia melalui perairan Teluk Aden.

Lanun Somalia yang tiba di Malaysia

Kira-kira pukul 11.40 malam pada hari Jumaat tersebut, kapal dagang itu yang disewa MISC Berhad telah ditawan sekumpulan tujuh lanun warga Somalia yang bersenjatakan AK-47 dan pistol.

Namun seramai 23 anak kapal dagang berkenaan berjaya diselamatkan tanpa sebarang kecederaan manakala kesemua tujuh lanun itu berjaya ditahan dan tiga daripada mereka turut cedera.

Ahmad Zahid berkata kesemua lanun itu berada dalam jagaan yang baik oleh ATM termasuk memberi rawatan kepada lanun yang cedera.

"Walaupun kita tahu mereka lanun dan dari segi perundangan kita tidak akan berkompromi, namun dari segi kemanusiaan kita beri layanan sewajarnya termasuk menjaga makan minum mereka," katanya.

Diminta mengulas tentang kenyataan Tentera Laut Kesatuan Eropah bahawa mereka tidak akan mengambil tindakan yang serupa yang dilakukan oleh ATM kerana menganggap serbuan seumpama itu boleh membahayakan nyawa tebusan, Ahmad Zahid: EU harus menghormati cara kita sebagaimana kita menghormati cara mereka."

Beliau berkata ATM telah mengambil tindakan awal dari segi pencegahan bagi memastikan pihak lanun tidak menjadikan anak kapal sebagai tebusan.

The story of the Academy began in 1977. The need to train and prepare Malaysians for the exciting maritime industry was addressed with the establishment of a non-profit making body called MATES (Malaysian Training and Education for Seamen) Foundation. Consisting of the Malaysian International Shipping Corporation Berhad (MISC) (now known as MISC Berhad), International Shipping Carriers Hong Kong and the Malaysian Ministry of Transport as their main promoters, the foundation soon pioneered the Maritime Training Centre (MTC) in 1977.

On 15 August 1981, MTC was subsequently upgraded to academy status and thus named ALAM, short for Akademi Laut Malaysia (Malaysian Maritime Academy). On 1 January 1997, ALAM was privatised to Malaysian Maritime Academy Sdn Bhd (MMA).

ALAM, the nation's premier maritime education and training establishment, has since been designated as a Branch Campus of the World Maritime University, Malmo, Sweden and has also established formal alliances with other leading maritime education and training institutions in Australia, Norway, The Netherlands, Singapore and The United States of America.

Malaysia muncul juara Piala AFF Suzuki 2010 selepas menang menerusi agregat 4-2. Dalam perlawanan tadi, Malaysia yang telah berjaya memperoleh kelebihan 3 gol di Bukit Jalil Ahad lepas lebih banyak bertahan dengan sesekali melakukan serangan balas pantas ke gawang Indonesia. Indonesia hampir mendahului Malaysia menerusi sepakan penalti Firman Utina tetapi Khairul Fahmi Che Mat berjaya meneka dengan tepat tendakan kapten Indonesia itu.

Ya bak kata orang putih theme Pirate. Lanun sememangnya sinonim dikaitkan dengan laut dan kapal. Mengimbas kembali kisah lanun Somalia yang pernah menahan kapal dagang Malaysia syarikat MISC iaitu kapal MV Melati untuk mendapatkan tebusan dari pihak syarikat. Dari segi pegalaman memang masih belom pernah di tahan oleh lanun sepanjang karier pelaut ini, tetapi masa akan datang kita sendiri pun tidak tahu.

Banjir di Kedah

ALOR SETAR 2 Nov. - Seramai 15,509 penduduk daripada 4,292 keluarga di beberapa daerah di Kedah dipindahkan ke pusat penempatan banjir akibat dilanda banjir teruk sejak semalam.

Daripada jumlah itu 10,834 penduduk daripada 3,108 keluarga adalah dari daerah Kubang Pasu, manakala 3,478 mangsa daripada 927 keluarga adalah dari Padang Terap, 709 penduduk daripada 154 keluarga di Kota Setar dan 488 penduduk daripada 103 keluarga di Pokok Sena.

Jurucakap bilik gerakan Majlis Keselamatan Negara, Ridwan Yahya berkata sebanyak 79 pusat penempatan mangsa banjir telah dibuka di keempat-empat daerah dan daripada jumlah itu, 31 di Kubang Pasu, 33 di Padang Terap, tujuh di Pokok Sena serta lapan di Kota Setar.

Sementara itu beliau berkata empat pusat di Padang Terap telah ditutup dan 166 penduduk daripada 42 keluarga telah pulang ke rumah masing-masing.

Antara kampung yang terbabit banjir di Kubang Pasu ialah, kampung Changkat Setoi, Paya Lantau, Malau, pekan Changlun, Jitra dan Kodiang, manakala bacaan paras air sungai Bata melepasi paras bahaya iaitu 10.22 meter (paras bahaya 9.14m).

Di Padang Terap antara yang terlibat ialah Mani A, Mani B, Mani C, Tanjung, Labi, Kuala Janing, Felcra Tualak, Bendang Raja serta Padang Sanai.

Bacaan paras air Sungai Kuala Nerang telah melepasi paras bahaya iaitu 20.94 meter berbanding paras bahaya 17.07 meter manakala tiga lagi sungai iaitu Sungai Padang Sanai di paras 33.45m (paras bahaya 36m), Sungai Kubu di paras 15.50m (paras bahaya 13.02m) dan Sungai Naka di paras 31.97 (paras bahaya 33m). - Bernama

A MIMA delegation led by Director General, Dr. Pola Singh visited Akademi Laut Malaysia (ALAM) or Malaysian Maritime Academy, the country's premier maritime education and training institution on 19 May 2010. The objective of the meeting was to strengthen the cordial ties which have existed between MIMA and ALAM and to learn about the academy's roles in developing human capital in the shipping sector and the programs it offers.
Established in 1977, ALAM has grown from strength to strength and enjoys a reputation for offering high-quality Cadet training programs and excellent courses for the shipping industry. As a measure of the quality of its curriculum, ALAM has been accredited with the accredited with the DNV SeaSkill Certification for the Nautical Studies and Marine Engineering courses, and has developed strategic alliances with reputable international maritime institutions and organisations. Such international recognition provides testimony to the academy's tireless efforts to provide a disciplined and regimented professional education system. Such a system encourages ALAM students to learn, lead, strategise and adapt in equipping them with optimal competency and preparing them for a reputable career in the maritime industry.

During the meeting, a discussion was held with ALAM's top management led by its amicable and dynamic CEO, Mr. Adthisaya Ganesen. Several ideas for MIMA and ALAM to work together to address issues relating to human capital development in Malaysia's shipping industry and to promote seafaring to Malaysians as an attractive profession were explored. The MIMA delegation was also taken on a tour of ALAM's scenic campus by the Straits of Malacca which include visits to its state-of-the-art Simulation Centre which features full-mission Ship Handling Simulator, Engine Room Simulator and Liquid Cargo Operations Simulator.

It certainly was an eye-opening visit to the 'nerve centre of maritime excellence' that has produced many of Malaysia's finest merchant shipping seamen and women. The visit ended on a positive note with Dr. Pola and Mr. Ganesen expressing their commitment to get MIMA and ALAM to collaborate in areas relating to maritime education and training for the betterment of the Malaysian shipping sector and maritime industry.

Oral (dipetik dari kamus dewan bahasa dan pustaka) bermaksud peperiksaan lisan. Peperiksaan Oral merupakan titik tolak kerjaya bagi kadet ALAM. Sistem peperiksaan ini unik disebabkan bukan melalui peperiksaan bertulis sebaliknya merupakan peperiksaan secara "one by one" bersama examiner.

Untuk menghadapi peperiksaan Oral, persediaan yang rapi dari segi Mental amat diperlukan sekali, ini disebabkan oleh psycho oleh examiner untuk mengetahui tahap keyakinan seseorang candidate.

Peperiksaan Oral dijalankan di MARDEP (Marine Department), sama ada di Port Klang atau Jabatan Laut Melaka (di Pantai Puteri), bagi Oral Officer more 500GT and Unlimited Voyage. Tempoh pepriksaan yang dijalankan bergnatung kepada tahap kepuashatian examiner kepada candidate. Mungkin 15 minit atau 3 jam!!! Tetapi secara puratanya selama 1jam bagi setiap individu.

Apa yang diuji dalam Oral??? Dari segi kefahaman saya, soalan Oral di bahagikan kepada beberapa kategori iaitu, basic, average dan vital question. Untuk soalan vital melingkupi skop Buoy, Flag, Rule Of Road (ROR), Situation to avoid collision, dan Light and Shape signal. Untuk kategori vital, candidate yang memberi jawapan yang salah sama sekali akan Failure kerana akan dianggap competence untuk melakukan navigational watch atau OOW.

Untuk soalan average, candidate akan diuji dari segi chart symbol, passage planning,action in emergency situation, cargo operation dan bagi kategori basic pula candidate Oral di Jabatan Laut akan diuji dengan soalan seperti publication (ALL,ALRS,ATT,ASD,MARPOL,SOLAS,IMDG dll berkenaan dengan publication) serta soalan berkenaan dengan LSA dan FFA. Ini merupakan basic yang perlu ada dalam candidate yang akan menjalankan tugas sebagai 4th or jr 3rd officer onboard.

Bagi calon yang lulus dalam peperikasaan Oral dikelolakan oleh MARDEP, mereka akan diisukan oleh COC class 3, (certificate of competency). Tetapi bagi yang gagal dalam Oral, mereka boleh mengambil semula, apply secara online di Laman Web rasmi Jabatan Laut Malaysia, untuk tempoh menunggu selama 2 bulan.

Suitability

Dangers
Not to be used on burning fat or oil or on electrical appliances

Method of Use
Point the jet at the base of the flames and keep it moving across the area of the fire. Ensure that all areas of the fire are out.

Theory
The water takes away the heat of the fire by cooling the burning material

Dry Powder Fire Extinguishers

Suitability
Wood, Cloth, Paper, Plastics, Coal, Liquids such as grease, fats, oil, paint, petrol.

Dangers
The powder is not good at getting into tiny spaces in electrical equipment easily so the the fire may re-ignite.
Not to be used on chip pan fires.

Method of Use
Point the nozzle at the base of the flames and, with a quick sweeping motion, drive the fire away from you until all the flames are out.

Theory
As well as knocking down flames, on burning solids it melts to form a layer or skin that smothers the fire.

Spray Foam Fire Extinguishers

Suitability
Limited number of liquid fires.

Dangers
Do not use on chip pan fires. Check manufacturer's instructions for suitability of use on other fires involving liquids.

These extinguishers are not recommended for home use.

Method of Use
Do not aim jet straight into the liquid. Where the liquid on fire is in a container, point the jet at a surface nearby the burning liquid. Allow the foam to build up and run across the liquid.

Theory
Forms a fire extinguishing film on the surface of a burning liquid. Has a cooling action with a wider extinguishing application than water on solid combustible materials.

Carbon Dioxide (CO2) Fire Extinguishers

Suitability
Liquids such as grease, fats, oil paint, petrol etc. but not on chip pan fires.

Dangers
Do not use on chip pan fires.

This type of extinguisher does not cool the fire very well and you need to watch that the fire does not start up again.

Fumes from CO2 extinguishers can be harmful if used in confined spaces: ventilate the area as soon as the fire has been controlled.

These extinguishers are generally not recommended for home use.

Method of Use
The discharge horn should be directed at the base of the flames and the jet kept moving across the area of the fire.

Theory
Vaporizing liquid gas which smothers the flames by displacing oxygen in the air.

Fire Blankets

Suitability
Fires involving solids & liquids. Excellent for small fires on clothing and for chip and fat pan fires

Dangers The blanket must completely cover the fire or it will not be extinguished.

Method of Use
Place carefully over the fire. Keep your hands away from the fire. Place the blanket down away from you.

Masyarakat Malaysia khususnya bukanlah satu masyarakat yang memandang tinggi seni lukisan berbanding seni yang lain terutamanya seni hiburan. Hal ini berbeza dengan ketamadunan lampau seperti semasa zaman kegemilangan Renaissance yang bertumpu di tempat-tempat seperti Tuscans, Venice dan Rome di mana banyak pelukis terkenal muncul seperti Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael dan Michelangelo. Lukisan-lukisan ini bukan sahaja terkenal, malahan cantik dengan hasil seninya selain mahal harganya. Menelusuri sejarah seni tampak dan seni lukis ini, 7 lukisan yang paling popular di dunia.

1) Monalisa by Da Vinci

Monalisa juga dikenali sebagai La Gioconda atau La Joconde dihasilkan oleh pelukis terkenal di dalam sejarah peradaban manusia, Leonardo Da Vinci yang memulakan proses lukisan ini di Florence, Italy seawal tahun 1503 Masihi. Potret ini mengambarkan seorang wanita yang sedang duduk dengan ekspresi muka yang digambarkan sebagai sangat misteri. Ada yang beranggapan bahawa senyuman tersebut menggambarkan satu rahsia yang tersembunyi dalam hati Monalisa.

Lukisan ini menjadi terkenal kerana perincian yang dilakukan yang membawa kepada satu revolusi dalam dunia lukisan minyak (oil painting) sewaktu zaman Renaissance. Beberapa tahun kebelakangan ini juga, Monalisa hadir dengan kontrovesi setelah usaha baik pulih (restoration) menunjukkan tanda yang Monalisa ini sebenarnya adalah lelaki dan lukisan ini menggambarkan Leonardo Da vinci yang sebenar. Kesahihannya? Belum dapat dipastikan.

2) Last Supper by Da Vinci

Sekali lagi, Da Vinci membuktikan yang beliau adalah seorang painter yang disanjungi dan dikagumi di dunia. Dalam kitab Kristian, lukisan ini dikatakan menggambarkan hidangan terakhir Jesus yang dikongsi bersama 12 orang pengikut kuat Kristian digelar Twelve Apostle.

Untuk menunjukkan betapa terkenalnya lukisan ini, ia telah dijadikan bahan humor dalam cerita kartun terkenal, South park (diharamkan siaran di Malaysia) yang menggambarkan lukisan ini sebagai asas kenapa Easter Celebration (perayaan telur) menjadikan arnab sebagai simbol.

3) Creation of Man by Michelangelo.

Michelangelo menghasilkan lukisan ini dalam tahun 1508 ke tahun 1512. Ia banyak dipengaruhi oleh elemen Kristian dimana lukisan ini dihasilkan untuk satu gereja sewaktu zaman kegemilangan Kristian semasa Renaissance. Lukisan ini digambarkan oleh 9 gambaran kejadian dalam buku Book of Genesis dimana buku Kristian, Creation of Adam menjadi terkenal. Oleh kerana teknik ilusi 3D yang dicipta dalam painting ini, painting ini dikatakan setaraf hanya dengan potret Monalisa karya Da Vinci.

4) The birth of Venus by Sandro Botticelli

Kanvas digunakan sebagai medium untuk melukis lukisan terkenal ini yang dianggarkan dihasilkan dalam tahun 1485 ke tahun 1487. Lukisan ini juga mendapat pengaruh Kristian dalam abad ke-16 dimana kelahiran Venus digambarkan. Ahli falsafah terkenal dunia Plato ada mengatakan bahawa Venus dikatakan sebagai dewi bumi (earthly goddess) yang membangkitkan ghairah manusia ataupun dewi syurga (heavenly goddess) yang menginspirasikan cinta spiritual dalam diri mereka. Venus juga dianggap dewi tercantik dan dengan melihat Venus, manusia akan lebih dekat dengan Si Pencipta.

5) Starry Night by Vincent van Gogh

Starry Night adalah lukisan paling terkenal Vincent Van Gogh yang hanya menjual satu lukisan dalam sejarah hidupnya. Beberapa faktor penting membawa kejayaan lukisan ini. Antaranya:

Langit malam dilitupi awan berpusar, bintang dengan terang sinar cahayanya dan juga bulan mengambang, satu gambaran malam yang mengasyikkan.
Dibawah lereng bukit adalah satu gambaran pekan kecil dengan struktur pembinaan yang sangat mendamaikan memberi satu ekspresi penuh suasana pekan kecil di zaman awal kegemilangan empayar Eropah. Di tengah-tengah pekan adanya satu menara gereja yang tinggi yang mendominasi semua bangunan kecil disekitarnya.
Di sebelah kiri lukisan ini adanya satu struktur hitam yang besar yang menutupi skala gambaran objek disekitarnya seperti rumah dan langit yang membawa kepada ilusi kedalaman (depth) lukisan ini.

6) Seine Grande Jatte by Georges Seurat

Seurat, satu nama unik yang menghasilkan lukisan santai ini. Lukisan ini menunjukkan gambaran masyarakat Paris yang menikmati perkelahan tengahari di sebuah taman. Dua tahun dihabiskan untuk menghasilkan lukisan ini dimana lukisan unik (rare) ini yang digamiti emosi mendalam dalam setiap watak dalam lukisan ini selain tema misteri yang ditampilkan. Teknik ‘dot’ yang lebih dikenali sebagai ‘pointillism’ atau ‘divisionism’ digunakan yang membawa kepada warna yang lebih cerah berbanding melukis dengan teknik berus (strokes). Gambaran lukisan dibayangkan membawa kepada satu dunia alternatif dimana dunia diberhentikan dan satu emosi kecantikan, pancaran cahaya matahari dan kesunyian diekspresikan, satu gambaran daripada dunia Seurat yang tidak mahu ditinggalkan.

7) Las Meninas

Las Meninas atau Maid of Honours dalam bahasa Inggeris adalah satu lukisan terkenal Diego Velazquez, seorang pelukis warga Spain yang dihasilkan pada tahun 1656.Diego adalah seorang pelukis perintis dalam era kegemilangan Spain yang dikenali sebagai Spanish Golden Age. Komposisi lukisan ini yang sangat kompleks dan misteri membawa kepada kegemilangannya. Dikhabarkan satu persoalan ilusi dan realiti timbul kerana perhubungan yang sangat penuh dengan uncertainty diantara viewers dan juga lukisan orang yang dilukis. Gambaran sesetengah watak melihat ke posisi viewers atau orang yang melihat gambar. Ini mewujudkan interaksi dua hala antara watak lukisan dan orang yang melihat lukisan ini, seterusnya menimbulkan satu ilusi unik.

Piala yang menjadi buruan setiap pasukan

PIALA Malaysia 2010 dibuka tirainya malam tadi dengan pasukan pilihan mengalami nasib berbeza. Juara Liga Super Selangor menang selesa di tempat sendiri tapi bagi naib juara Kelantan, kekalahan kepada juara bertahan Negeri Sembilan ibarat satu tamparan.

Rehat sepanjang Ramadan tidak menjejaskan perancangan Selangor yang menang 3-1 ke atas T-Team, hasil jaringan D. Surendran, Rudie Ramli dan R. Surendren manakala Rosli Muda membalas jaringan tunggal T-Team.

Sejumlah 21 jaringan terhasil pada malam pertama Piala Malaysia 2010 dan lima daripadanya di Kangar, dengan Perlis mencatat kemenangan secara dramatik apabila penyerang kebangsaan Ahmad Fakri Saarani menyumbang dua gol, termasuk gol kemenangan pada saat-saat akhir.

Di Kota Bharu, pengadil Yusof Karim menghadiahkan sepakan penalti buat pelawat Negeri Sembilan apabila S. Subramaniam menjatuhkan Idris Karim pada minit ke-73. Pemain tengah, Abdul Halim Zainal, tanpa segan silu tampil menyempurnakan penalti, memperdayakan penjaga gol Kelantan, Syed Adney Syed Hussain.

Kedah mengikat Johor FC 1-1. Baddrol Bakhtiar membuka tirai jaringan seawal minit ketiga tetapi Johor FC akhirnya memastikan satu mata apabila Wan Rohaimi Ismail menyamakan kedudukan tiga minit sebelum tamat.
